- Craft
Craft is know-how to achieve a goal. Holding of a pencil to make marks on paper is a craft. Skilled use of pencil marks can make a drawing very powerful. Being made to learn pencil skills without feeling inspired can kill the use of a pencil for self-expression. I only teach craft to further a student’s personal goals. If a student refuses my offer to enhance his or her skill, that’s OK too.
I love to draw and have achieved a high degree of skill.. And as much as I love to share my skills with my students, I would never force my ways of drawing on them, thereby killing their desires to draw. Their love of drawing is much more important than my love of teaching drawing techniques. I’ve developed some good ones, too, so sometimes it’s hard for me hold back. I do it though, because I’m dedicated to my students.
